WCI GATE
Gifted And Talented Enrichment
ABOUT US
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Our Mission
Our mission is to make every student at WCI leave us better. How can we do this?
Each High School in the Thames Valley District School Board offers a broad range of programming for Gifted, Bright and Talented Students. We offer curriculum compacting for some courses at WCI. These courses are assessed at the same standard as their academic counterparts, but allow for increased differentiation through faster paced learning and less repetition so that areas of specific interests can be explored in greater depth and breadth. In grades 10, 11 and 12 we offer a broad range of programming including Interdisciplinary courses, leadership and character building programs, specialized co-op placements, independent studies, and honours thesis programs.
The TVDSB also facilitates a number of extra-curricular and co-curricular learning options. These include, but are not limited to, such experiences as Queen’s University E=MC2 program, the Ontario Science Centre Science School, and the Partners in Experiential Learning academic co-op program. Moreover, many of our Gifted students take advantage of Western University’s W.I.S.E program, whereby high school students can attend and earn a Western University credit free of tuition (only paying for transportation and texts). WCI also offers Advanced Placement (AP) exams, preparation and tutorials, as well as AP courses in English. If students earn a level 4 or 5 on an AP exam, they are granted a university credit and may even be granted advanced standing at many Canadian and International universities.
In addition, students requiring enrichment across the Board are engaging in inquiry-based learning through ELOPE, where students participate in various outreach opportunities or large-scale enrichment conferences with guest speakers and hands-on enrichment. This diverse range of programs is providing opportunities for our Gifted, Bright and Talented students to flourish.
The Special Education Departments will ensure that programs and resources are made available in various capacities including in-school and online curriculum compacting options, Interdisciplinary Studies, the ELOPE enrichment withdrawal program, and Advanced Placement. The Co-op program will aid in the placement of students wishing to do research in the medical field and who wish to partake in the PEL program

FAQ

What is GATE?
GATE (Gifted and Talented Enrichment) at WCI can be for
anyone interested.
It is for those who wish to seek enriching opportunities
in a variety of ways. It is based
on ELOPE - Extended Learning Opportunities Through Progressive Enrichment. This is a TVDSB-wide program. It is a like minded group for students, who meet weekly or monthly for various activities. All students are welcome, however, members are typically highly academically successful, highly motivated and looking for ways to be enriched or challenged. Students, along with staff advisors, help to plan workshops, discussions, field trips or guest speakers that are of interest. These opportunities are mostly at lunch, but can also include school time. Students in this group have been nominated by teachers, however, all who are interested are encouraged to come to meetings or activities. Once students have a firm footing at WCI, we will also be exploring other types of enrichment opportunities, such as AP (Advanced Placement) and Curriculum Compacting/Self Directed Learning opportunities.

What is Advanced Placement?
Advanced Placement is an international program which allows students to prepare for a university exam (written in May) in an area of interest which may earn them a university credit. This past few years, the three Woodstock secondary schools participated in the AP program. Currently at WCI we offer AP and Enrichment in English. If students are interested in other subject areas, they are welcome to participate in a self-directed type setting. See here for more examples.
What is Curriculum Compacting:
-
Are you gifted, bright and/or talented?
-
Would you like a deeper/enriched experience in one of your classes?
-
Do you work well independently and think self-directed learning would be interesting?
-
If you answered yes to these questions, ask Ms Marano or Ms Moir about curriculum compacting and/or self directed learning. See here for more examples.
