WHAT WE DO

Curriculum Compacting

WCI offers curriculum compacting to students who have been identified as gifted, bright or talented.  Students normally have a high average and great attendance.  They must also be able to work independently and motivate themselves. Curriculum compacting basically entails compacting a course to do it in a shorter amount of time.  The course that students usually want to compact is the Civics and Careers course offered in grade 10. We are starting to offer compacting grade 9 Geography, but at the moment it is only offered to identified Gifted students.  Compacting can be done in different ways.  It can be done through self-directed learning projects or following an online course.  Compacting works well for students who want to get ahead in school.  This gives them to opportunity to take the PEL program, AP or IDC courses.  WCI is also offering a Pilot Project for chosen students who wish to participate in more self-directed learning opportunities in all their courses.

IDC 3O/4O or 4U

Create your own course!  Study what interests you. This course will help students combine the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Through individual and collaborative inquiry and research, students will analyse the connections among diverse subjects and disciplines; develop information literacy skills in analysing, selecting, evaluating, and communicating information; and become aware of a variety of resources and viewpoints on contemporary issues. They will also examine their own learning styles, relate their inquiries and research to real-life situations, and investigate career opportunities in new disciplines. The 4U course will require a thesis.

ELOPE

Extended Learning Opportunities through Progressive Enrichment

It represents in-school programming that is workshop style and student-interest driven.  It includes a range of activities from novel studies, debates, and philosophical discussions to guest speakers, pottery, forensic problem-solving, and critical thinking.  Just a few examples at WCI in 2015 include our Grow Wild Workshop on Species At Risk or reading a novel written by a local author and having him come to discuss the book.  We also made our own healthy green smoothies (they even included dandelion greens!).  ELOPE also offers Spark workshops that are offered to all enrichment students in TVDSB.

AP

AP = Advanced Placement

AP is overseen by the College Board, the same not-for-

profit organization that administers the SATs (Scholastic

Aptitude Tests) that most American students write to gain

admission to university.

Earning a level 4 out of 5 on an AP exam allows you to earn

a university credit while still in high school. More and more

Canadian universities (including UWO, Waterloo, Guelph,

and Toronto) recognize AP credits. Most US universities

recognize and encourage AP, and participation in the

program boosts chances for earning scholarships.

AP exams are more comprehensive and demanding than your 4U level exams. But with extra study and coaching from teachers, you may rise to this challenge, enhance your knowledge and skills, boost your confidence, and prove that you are already capable of university-level work.

Even if you do not attain the 4/5 to earn a university credit, the experience of writing a challenging, three-hour "university exam" is VERY valuable.

The cost of the exam is US $91 – considerably less than the $1000 university-course tuition.

If any of this interests you, please see Ms Mitchell. She will provide more information.  You might also visit the College Board website at www.collegeboard.com/apstudents or the Canadian AP websitehttp://apcanada.collegeboard.org/

WCI offers AP English!  See description below!

Note: ENG4UA is a blend of grade 12 university curriculum and prepares students to write AP Literature and Composition exam in May. This course will be offered in Semester 1. A minimum mark of 80% in ENd

PEL - Partners in Experiential Learning

PEL is a co-op program for students looking to work in the medical research field. Partners in Education programs exist to enhance the educational process and facilitate growth. PEL is a Partners in Education initiative that was implemented in the 2004-2005 school year to extend the continuum of training for graduate students offered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Strategic Training Program in Cancer Research & Technology Transfer (CIHR-STP CaRTT) to include secondary school co-op students. All senior secondary co-op students, who are highly motivated to pursue a workplace assignment in research and are recommended by their co-op teacher will be considered.
